External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during his visit to Ghana, with discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding cooperation into new sectors and advancing issues concerning the Global South. Jaishankar said the visit aims to build on the comprehensive partnership established between India and Ghana following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country.
The two sides discussed expanding cooperation across agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, mining, defence, railways and digital technology. Jaishankar highlighted similarities between India’s development initiatives and Ghana’s programmes, including Ghana’s Accra Reset, Feed Ghana and its target of developing one million coders, alongside India’s initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, Digital India, Startup India and efforts to support farmers and promote millets. India and Ghana also signed agreements in agricultural research and training and biodiversity, while both sides explored opportunities for deeper collaboration in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, mining, defence and the digital sector.
Jaishankar also underlined Ghana’s important role in the African Union and ECOWAS, noting that India shares long-standing relations with both organisations. He stressed the need for India and Ghana to work together to strengthen the voice of the Global South, particularly on United Nations reform and reform of the UN Security Council, where the two countries share broadly similar views.
Calling the emerging global order increasingly multipolar, Jaishankar said countries such as India and Ghana should strengthen the voices of nations seeking strategic autonomy and the freedom to make independent decisions. He said closer cooperation between the two countries could benefit not only India and Ghana but also the wider region and the international community.
