India is preparing to take a clearer regulatory approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the Centre expected to release a consultation paper on AI regulation within the next month. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government believes it is now time to establish a framework that addresses the safe and responsible use of rapidly evolving AI technologies.
The proposed consultation will seek views from experts and the public on key concerns, including AI safety, deepfakes, responsible use of AI and putting human interests at the centre of technological development. The government is particularly concerned about AI-generated fake videos, images and audio, which are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from authentic content.
Vaishnaw highlighted the growing threat posed by deepfakes, warning that misleading AI-generated content can influence public perception, spread misinformation and lead people to believe false information. The proposed framework is also expected to focus on AI-related skills and ensuring that people are not left behind as the technology transforms different sectors. The minister stressed that while India moves forward with AI adoption and innovation, human beings and their interests must remain at the heart of the regulatory process.
