Delhi Ranks Ahead of Mumbai & Bengaluru in Global Liveability Index 2026; Copenhagen Tops the World

Delhi has emerged as India’s highest-ranked metro in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2026, securing the 120th position among 173 cities worldwide. The national capital now ranks ahead of Mumbai (121), Chennai (123), and Bengaluru (127), reflecting improvements in overall living conditions. While recent monsoon rains have brought relief from heat and improved air quality, the report evaluates cities based on broader factors such as stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education, and infrastructure.

Despite the progress, no Indian city made it into the global Top 100, highlighting continued challenges in healthcare, infrastructure, and air quality. Globally, Copenhagen, Denmark, claimed the top spot as the world’s most liveable city, followed by Vienna, Austria, and Zurich, Switzerland. The report also noted that Western Europe remains the most liveable region overall, although its average score has plateaued, while Asian cities continue to improve. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict, have negatively impacted stability scores across parts of the Gulf region.
