Shubman Gill Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record, Becomes Fastest Indian Captain to Reach 1,000 Test Runs

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill continued his impressive run of form by scoring a fluent 126 against Afghanistan in the ongoing one-off Test at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur. Gill’s innings, which included 15 fours and a six off 177 balls, marked yet another milestone as he crossed 1,000 Test runs as captain in just 351 days, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of 405 days to reach the landmark.

With this achievement, Gill has become the fastest Indian captain to reach 1,000 runs in Test cricket, underlining his consistency at the top level since taking over leadership duties. The young batter has also become the 11th Indian captain to reach the milestone, joining an elite list led by Virat Kohli, who tops the chart with 5,864 runs as Test captain. Gill’s prolific form has also placed him among the greatest in terms of batting average as a Test captain (minimum 1,000 runs), where he currently stands second behind Don Bradman.

While Bradman leads with a staggering average of 101.5, Gill follows with an average of 82.8, ahead of legends like Kumar Sangakkara, Steve Smith, and Mahela Jayawardene. In his overall Test career, Gill has now played 41 matches, scoring 2,969 runs in 74 innings at an average of 43.66, including 11 centuries and 8 half-centuries, along with a double hundred. His latest milestone further strengthens his growing reputation as one of India’s most promising young leaders in red-ball cricket.
