The global AI race is getting even bigger. In what could become one of the largest technology partnerships in history, NVIDIA is reportedly in talks to provide financing guarantees for OpenAI’s massive $250 billion AI data center project. If finalized, the deal could reshape the future of artificial intelligence infrastructure while strengthening NVIDIA’s dominance in the AI chip market. According to reports, the financing guarantee would support the construction of a 10-gigawatt data center campus in southern Ohio, a project being developed by SoftBank’s energy division. The overall investment—including AI chips and infrastructure—is estimated to exceed $500 billion, making it one of the most ambitious technology projects ever proposed. However, neither NVIDIA, OpenAI, nor the U.S. Department of Commerce has officially confirmed the discussions.
For OpenAI, the project represents a major step toward building and controlling its own AI infrastructure, reducing its reliance on cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle. At the same time, NVIDIA stands to secure long-term demand for its industry-leading AI chips, with reports also suggesting discussions around financing up to $350 billion worth of chip purchases for OpenAI. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2028, delivering around 800 megawatts of computing capacity.
Power for the facility is expected to be backed by the U.S. government, while part of the funding could come from a $33 billion natural gas investment linked to a recent U.S.-Japan trade agreement. Reports also indicate that Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google have held discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick regarding the project. If the agreement moves forward, it will mark a defining moment in the AI revolution—highlighting the unprecedented scale of investment flowing into artificial intelligence and setting the stage for the next generation of global AI infrastructure.
