India’s long-awaited Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Project is entering its final phase, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that the country’s first bullet train is expected to begin operations on August 15, 2027. The initial service will run between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, with the corridor being extended in phases to Vapi, Ahmedabad, Thane, and finally Mumbai.
Designed to operate at speeds of up to 320 km/h, the bullet train is expected to revolutionize rail travel by significantly reducing travel time while offering world-class comfort, advanced safety systems, and modern infrastructure. According to the Railway Ministry, nearly 80% of the construction work on the 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor has already been completed. The project is expected to boost trade, tourism, investment, and regional economic growth by improving connectivity between two of India’s most important economic hubs.
The Railway Minister also highlighted the ongoing modernization of 261 railway stations across the country, stating that the upgraded stations will feature airport-like passenger amenities while train operations continue uninterrupted during redevelopment. In addition, the government has approved feasibility work for three proposed high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad–Pune, Hyderabad–Chennai, and Hyderabad–Bengaluru, a move aimed at strengthening high-speed rail connectivity across southern India.
