IAS Ashok Kumar Appointed Delhi’s New Chief Electoral Officer

The Election Commission of India has appointed senior IAS officer Ashok Kumar as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi, marking a key administrative change ahead of upcoming electoral processes in the national capital. He will replace R. Alice Vaz in the role.

Ashok Kumar, a 2006-batch AGMUT cadre officer, was selected after the Delhi government submitted a panel of three IAS officers to the Election Commission earlier this year. The appointment was formalised through an official notification issued by the Commission’s secretariat. The decision has been taken under the powers conferred by Section 13A(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, in consultation with the Delhi government. The Commission has directed Kumar to assume charge immediately and asked the Delhi government to submit a compliance report within a week.

With extensive administrative experience, Kumar has previously handled key departments including revenue, administration and urban development. Currently, he is serving as Secretary in the General Administration Department of the Delhi government and also holds additional charge of the Labour Department. Officials believe the appointment is aimed at strengthening Delhi’s election preparedness. Kumar will oversee crucial tasks such as revision of electoral rolls and ensuring transparent and efficient conduct of upcoming democratic processes.
