US Approves $482 Million Military Support Package to Strengthen India’s Apache and M777 Systems

The United States has approved a $482.2 million (approximately ₹4,555 crore) military support package for India, marking a significant boost in defence cooperation between the two countries. The assistance is aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of India’s existing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, rather than supplying any new weapons systems. According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the formal notification was issued on June 17 and published in the Federal Register.

The package is being viewed as an important step in strengthening the India-US strategic defence partnership, particularly in the context of growing security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The proposed support includes technical assistance, spare parts, maintenance services, logistics support, and training for both Apache helicopters and M777 artillery systems. The objective is to ensure maximum operational efficiency and readiness of these advanced platforms used by the Indian armed forces.

India had earlier procured M777A2 howitzers from the US, which are specifically designed for deployment in high-altitude and difficult terrains, while the AH-64E Apache helicopters are considered among the most advanced combat helicopters in the world, widely used for precision strikes and battlefield support. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor welcomed the decision, stating that it further deepens defence cooperation between the two nations. Experts believe the deal reflects long-term strategic trust and growing military collaboration between India and the US, especially amid evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. Overall, the $482 million package is expected to enhance India’s existing combat capabilities by ensuring better maintenance, training, and logistical support for key military platforms, thereby strengthening overall defence preparedness.
