The Indian Air Force is preparing to strengthen its combat fleet with a proposed overhaul and upgrade of around 40 Su-30MKI fighter jets. The proposal is expected to be considered at the Defence Acquisition Council meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on September 7, with the aim of keeping the ageing fleet operational and extending its service life.
The programme has been planned by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which plays a key role in the manufacturing, maintenance and upgrades of India’s Su-30MKI fleet. The IAF operates around 260 Su-30MKIs, making the aircraft one of its most important combat assets for air-superiority and long-range strike missions. The proposed overhaul comes as part of a broader effort to maintain the readiness of the fleet.
Earlier, approval had also been given for the overhaul of Su-30 aircraft engine aggregates, while additional Su-30MKI aircraft are being produced to strengthen the IAF’s numbers. If approved, the 40-aircraft overhaul could give India’s frontline fighter fleet a significant operational boost, ensuring that older Su-30MKIs remain combat-ready for years to come.
