India’s ambitious indigenous stealth fighter programme, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), could receive a major boost as the government considers a proposed partnership between DRDO and French aerospace company Safran for the development of a high-thrust fighter jet engine. According to reports, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) could consider the proposal around mid-August. However, final approval has not yet been officially announced.
The proposed programme aims to jointly develop a powerful turbofan engine for future variants of the AMCA. Reports suggest the arrangement could include extensive technology transfer, intellectual property rights for India and the development of nine prototype engines over approximately 12 years. The engine is reportedly being planned with an initial thrust of around 120 kN, with the potential to scale up to approximately 140 kN for future requirements such as the AMCA Mk2.
Developing an indigenous fighter aircraft engine is considered one of the most challenging components of India’s defence self-reliance programme. Lessons from the long-running Kaveri engine project and India’s continuing dependence on foreign-origin engines have further highlighted the importance of acquiring advanced engine-design and manufacturing capabilities.
If approved and successfully executed, the DRDO-Safran programme could significantly strengthen India’s ability to design and manufacture advanced fighter jet engines domestically. It would also represent a major step towards reducing long-term dependence on foreign suppliers for one of the most critical technologies required for next-generation combat aircraft.
