India’s automobile market could soon see two new additions, with Maruti Suzuki working on an electric MPV codenamed YMC and Hyundai preparing to introduce the Bayon SUV. Maruti’s electric MPV could be unveiled towards the end of this year or early next year, while the Hyundai Bayon is expected to make its global debut on October 12, followed by a possible Indian launch in the coming weeks. However, official launch timelines and specifications for the Indian market remain subject to confirmation.
Hyundai Bayon: Creta Engine and Premium Features Expected
The India-spec Hyundai Bayon is expected to feature a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine similar to the one offered in the Creta, producing around 115 bhp and 144 Nm of torque. Transmission options could include a six-speed manual and a CVT automatic, while a CNG variant may also be considered. Unlike the global model, which has a hatchback-inspired design, the Indian version is expected to adopt an SUV-style appearance. Potential features include a curved dual-screen setup, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, wireless charging, Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera. The report also states that bookings have opened with a token amount of ₹11,000, although official market-specific details should be confirmed.
Maruti YMC Electric MPV: 6- and 7-Seater Options
Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming YMC electric MPV could compete with the Kia Carens Clavis EV. It is expected to offer six- and seven-seat configurations and may use the platform and powertrain technology associated with the Maruti e Vitara. Battery options could include 49 kWh and 61 kWh packs, with a claimed range of more than 500 kilometres on a full charge being anticipated. Expected features include a large touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging, electrically adjustable driver seating and ventilated front seats. These specifications and the projected range have not yet been officially confirmed.
The Hyundai Bayon could appeal to buyers looking for a feature-rich petrol SUV, potentially with a CNG option, while Maruti Suzuki’s YMC could target families seeking a spacious electric vehicle with multiple seating configurations. Pricing, final specifications and confirmed launch dates will be important factors in determining how both vehicles compete in India’s growing automobile market.
