India is set to achieve a major milestone in defence manufacturing as the first domestically assembled C-295 military transport aircraft, produced through a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems and European aerospace giant Airbus, is expected to be delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by the last week of November 2026. The development marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s defence self-reliance and expanding private-sector participation in military aircraft production. The aircraft, manufactured at the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, successfully completed its maiden flight on June 10, 2026. Following the flight, it underwent a series of technical evaluations, performance assessments and safety checks. According to sources, the necessary flight trials and technical inspections have now been completed, paving the way for its formal handover to the IAF. However, an official delivery date is yet to be announced.
The development is part of a major defence agreement signed in 2021 for the procurement of 56 C-295 military transport aircraft. Under the agreement, the first 16 aircraft are being manufactured in Spain, while the remaining 40 are scheduled to be produced in India. The first Indian-made aircraft will be the 17th in the overall fleet. Its delivery was initially scheduled for September 2026 but was delayed, with the revised timeline now pointing towards the end of November. The C-295 is a modern tactical transport aircraft designed to carry military personnel, weapons, equipment, essential supplies and humanitarian relief materials. One of its key operational advantages is its ability to take off and land on relatively short runways, making it particularly useful for missions in remote and challenging terrain. The aircraft is expected to enhance the IAF’s logistical capabilities and improve its ability to support military and disaster-relief operations.
Beyond its operational significance, the project represents an important shift in India’s aerospace manufacturing sector. It is the country’s first major military aircraft manufacturing programme involving a private-sector final assembly line. The Tata-Airbus collaboration is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, support technological development and create opportunities for Indian aerospace suppliers. The successful production and anticipated delivery of the first India-assembled C-295 could also help reduce dependence on foreign-built military aircraft over time. As India continues to promote indigenous defence manufacturing under its Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, the programme is being viewed as a significant step towards building a stronger and more competitive domestic aerospace industry.
