IAF to Deploy First Tejas Mk1A Squadrons Near Pakistan Border in Rajasthan

In a significant boost to India’s western air defense capabilities, the Indian Air Force is preparing to deploy its first indigenous HAL Tejas Mk1A fighter squadrons near the Pakistan border in Rajasthan. The move marks a major shift in India’s frontline combat strategy and reflects the growing role of homegrown defense technology in national security. According to defense sources, Rajasthan’s Nal Air Force Station in Bikaner will become the primary operating base for the first and third Tejas Mk1A squadrons from 2026 onward. These advanced fighters will replace the aging Mikoyan MiG-21 Bison aircraft that have served the Indian Air Force for decades. Meanwhile, the Phalodi Air Force Station will host the second Tejas Mk1A squadron, with large-scale infrastructure upgrades already underway to support the deployment.

The forward deployment of Tejas Mk1A aircraft near the western frontier is being viewed as part of the IAF’s evolving combat doctrine aimed at enhancing rapid response capability and sustaining high-tempo operations during conflict situations. Positioning these aircraft closer to the border will significantly improve Quick Reaction Alert operations and allow the Air Force to launch more combat sorties in a shorter time frame. The Tejas Mk1A is equipped with several advanced technologies, including AESA radar, modern electronic warfare systems, mid-air refueling capability, and the indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range missile system. Compared to the older MiG-21 fleet, the Mk1A offers superior survivability, precision strike capability, and network-centric warfare features, making it one of India’s most advanced light combat fighters.

To support these operations, the Air Force has carried out extensive modernization work at both Nal and Phalodi bases. This includes the construction of Hardened Aircraft Shelters, advanced maintenance hangars, and mission planning centers designed to ensure uninterrupted operational readiness during wartime scenarios. The deployment also highlights India’s push for defense self-reliance under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has received orders for 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft from the Indian Air Force, a move expected to reduce dependence on foreign military platforms and strengthen indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.
