India Unveils Three Homegrown AI Models, Two Can Work Without Internet

India has taken another significant step toward strengthening its position in the global artificial intelligence race with the launch of three indigenous AI models — EKA-1, Dhir 2B, and Dhir 5B. Developed with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the IndiaAI Mission, these models aim to make artificial intelligence more accessible, multilingual, and secure for Indian users.

One of the biggest highlights of the launch is that two of these models, Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B, can operate directly on compatible smartphones and laptops without requiring an active internet connection. This could reduce dependence on cloud-based AI services while offering greater control over personal and sensitive information.

EKA-1: A Powerful AI Model Supporting 22 Indian Languages

Developed by Bengaluru-based startup Soket Labs, EKA-1 is the largest of the three models, featuring 26.3 billion parameters and reportedly trained on 7.5 trillion data tokens. Designed for complex mathematical reasoning, software coding, and logical problem-solving, the model supports English and all 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Its multilingual capabilities and advanced reasoning features could make it useful across sectors such as banking, financial services, cybersecurity, and enterprise technology.

Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B: Offline AI for Everyday Tasks

Developed by ZenteiQ AiTech Innovations, Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B are smaller, open-source AI models designed to simplify everyday digital tasks. Supporting English and 10 Indian languages, the models can assist users in extracting key information from documents, identifying important details, and handling routine information-processing activities. Unlike many cloud-based AI services, these models are designed to run locally on compatible devices after installation. This means users can access certain AI capabilities without an internet connection, although performance will depend on the device’s hardware.

IndiaAI Mission Strengthens Domestic Innovation

Developing advanced AI models requires substantial investment, computing infrastructure, and research expertise. Through the IndiaAI Mission, the government has supported domestic startups by providing access to subsidised computing resources and financial assistance for research and development. These three models reflects India’s growing ambition to develop its own AI capabilities, reduce reliance on foreign technology platforms, and build solutions tailored to the country’s linguistic and technological needs.
