Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has arrived in India on a three-day official visit from September 2 to 4, marking a significant milestone in India–Belgium relations. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this is De Wever’s first visit to India since taking office in 2025 and the first visit by a Belgian Prime Minister to India in nearly two decades. The visit aims to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, technology and strategic connectivity.
On September 3, Prime Minister Modi and Bart De Wever will hold high-level bilateral talks in New Delhi, where both leaders are expected to discuss regional and global issues alongside expanding economic and strategic partnerships. The Belgian Prime Minister will also address a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) business forum, with a strong focus on the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and strengthening commercial ties.
The visit will conclude in Mumbai on September 4, where De Wever will meet stakeholders from the diamond industry, ports, logistics and maritime sectors. Belgium remains one of India’s key economic partners in Europe, having invested over US$4.2 billion in India since 2000. With growing collaboration in renewable energy, innovation, defence and supply-chain connectivity, the visit is expected to give fresh momentum to an already expanding strategic partnership between the two nations.
