September 2026 Bank Holidays: Check Before You Visit

If you have important banking work scheduled for September 2026, make sure you check the holiday calendar before heading to your branch. According to the RBI holiday schedule provided, banks will remain closed for a total of 14 days during the month due to festivals, regional holidays and regular Saturday-Sunday offs. However, these holidays will not apply uniformly across India, as several closures are limited to specific states or cities.

Bank customers may face disruption not only because of holidays but also due to a proposed nationwide bank strike on September 11, 2026. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced the strike over demands including a five-day banking week, pension-related issues and performance-linked incentives. The UFBU has also announced another three-day strike from September 28, coinciding with the banks’ half-yearly closing period. Banking unions have further warned that if their demands remain unresolved, an indefinite nationwide strike could begin from October 26.

Even when bank branches remain closed, most digital banking facilities are expected to remain available. Customers can generally use UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs for routine transactions. RTGS services are also available round the clock throughout the year. However, services that require a physical branch visit—such as certain cash transactions, document submissions and other in-person banking work—may have to wait until the branch reopens. So, before September begins, check your local bank holiday list and complete any important branch-related work in advance.
