The ambitious Dehradun–Mussoorie ropeway project, connecting Purkul in Dehradun to Library Chowk in Mussoorie, is set to significantly transform travel in Uttarakhand. Built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the ropeway aims to provide a fast, safe, and reliable alternative to the heavily congested road route, especially during peak tourist seasons and weekends.
With a capacity of over 2,000 passengers per hour, the ropeway is expected to drastically reduce traffic pressure on the Dehradun–Mussoorie highway. It will offer a major relief to tourists who currently face long traffic jams, while also providing a scenic aerial view of the picturesque Doon Valley during the journey. Officials say the ropeway will play a crucial role during emergencies as well. In cases of landslides, road blockages, or heavy snowfall, it will ensure uninterrupted transportation of patients, essential goods, and supplies between Dehradun and Mussoorie. This makes it a critical infrastructure project for year-round connectivity in the hill region.
The project is also expected to significantly boost local tourism and the economy. Improved connectivity is likely to increase footfall in Mussoorie, benefiting hotels, restaurants, shopkeepers, and tour operators. Authorities believe it will also reduce road accidents and travel risks associated with mountainous terrain. District Tourism Officer Bijendra Pandey stated that the project is progressing rapidly and is being fast-tracked for early completion to benefit both residents and tourists. Once operational, the ropeway is expected to become a landmark development in Uttarakhand’s transport infrastructure.
