India’s leading automaker Maruti Suzuki is set to unveil the country’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle on June 5, marking a significant step toward reducing dependence on petrol and diesel. The launch will coincide with World Environment Day, highlighting the company’s push toward cleaner mobility solutions. According to reports, the upcoming model will be capable of running on 100% ethanol (E100), making it the first of its kind in the Indian four-wheeler segment. The vehicle will feature a specially designed fuel system, engine calibration, and ignition setup to support ethanol-based fuel, offering an alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
The announcement gains further significance as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has previously emphasized the importance of ethanol blending in reducing emissions and fuel imports. India has already been promoting ethanol-blended fuels, and this launch aligns with the government’s broader green energy strategy. Maruti Suzuki has earlier showcased flex-fuel prototypes, including models capable of running on E85 fuel (85% ethanol blend). One such concept was displayed at the Japan Mobility Show, where the company demonstrated its technological progress in alternative fuel systems.
Industry observers believe the company may introduce a popular model such as WagonR or Fronx with flex-fuel capability. These vehicles could support multiple ethanol blends, offering flexibility and wider adoption potential in the Indian market. Flex-fuel technology is expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs in the long term, and decrease India’s dependence on imported crude oil. With government backing and rising environmental concerns, Maruti Suzuki’s move could mark a major shift in India’s automotive future.
