Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday unveiled several key initiatives for Tamil Nadu in the Union Budget 2026, focusing on infrastructure, environment, and heritage development. Among the major announcements are a high-speed rail link for Chennai, eco-friendly mountain trails in the Podhigai Malai region of the Western Ghats and the establishment of a ‘Rare Mineral Corridor’ to promote mining, processing, research and manufacturing in mineral-rich states including Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.
In addition, the budget proposes the development of bird-watching trails along Pulicat Lake and the transformation of the Adichanallur archaeological site into a vibrant cultural and experiential destination. These projects aim to enhance tourism, heritage conservation, and local economic opportunities while remaining environmentally conscious. The initiatives are part of a broader vision to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure, tourism, and mineral-based economy, while providing world-class trekking and hiking experiences in the Western Ghats.
