India Launches Major Tri-Service Military Drill in Andaman

India has launched a three-day joint military exercise in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to strengthen its defence preparedness and operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean region. The exercise involves all three services—the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force—and aims to test weapons systems, enhance inter-service coordination and reinforce India’s strategic presence in the region. The exercise, being conducted near Sri Vijaya Puram, is scheduled to continue until October 22. The precautionary measures are intended to ensure safety during the military activities.

According to sources, the exercise may involve fighter aircraft conducting cannon-fire drills, along with missile and rocket testing. Naval and air force platforms are also expected to participate. However, the armed forces have not publicly disclosed the complete details of the weapons systems or operational activities involved in the exercise. The Andaman and Nicobar Command holds considerable strategic importance for India because of its location near the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. Situated approximately 1,200 kilometres from mainland India, the island chain provides a crucial position for monitoring maritime activity and safeguarding national interests across the Indian Ocean.

Earlier this year, the Andaman and Nicobar Command conducted Exercise Dweep Shakti from March 24 to 28, 2026. The large-scale joint exercise involved the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Such exercises are aimed at strengthening joint operational capabilities, improving coordination among security forces and ensuring India’s readiness to respond to emerging maritime and regional security challenges.
