India Successfully Tested Indigenous Long-Range ‘Kusha’ Air Defense Missile System

India has taken a significant step toward bolstering its aerial defense capabilities with the successful maiden test of the indigenous long-range surface-to-air ‘Kusha’ missile system, conducted off the coast of Odisha from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island. During the test, the missile accurately intercepted and destroyed a high-speed, high-altitude electronic target, simulating real-world combat scenarios.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the ‘Kusha’ system is designed to neutralize a wide array of aerial threats at long ranges and high altitudes, including fighter jets, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, and large military aircraft. This advancement is expected to significantly enhance the response time and overall effectiveness of India’s multi-layered air defense network.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO team, highlighting that possessing the capability to develop such advanced long-range missile systems is a privilege held by only a select few nations globally. He noted that this milestone will further strengthen national security and reduce dependence on foreign defense imports.

Defense Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh personally monitored the test and commended the scientists and engineers involved. Experts emphasize that the successful deployment of the ‘Kusha’ system marks a major leap toward self-reliance in cutting-edge defense technology, ultimately providing the Indian Armed Forces with superior operational readiness.
