India-Made C-295 Takes Maiden Flight, Marking Major Boost to Defence Manufacturing

India achieved a significant milestone in its defence manufacturing journey as the first fully India-made C-295 military transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight from the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. The achievement is being hailed as a major step forward for the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative and a landmark moment for private-sector participation in military aviation. Manufactured through a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus, the aircraft represents the first military transport plane to be built in India by a private company.

The successful test flight highlights India’s growing capabilities in aerospace production and strengthens its ambition to become a global defence manufacturing hub. The C-295 aircraft is set to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force by replacing its ageing Avro-748 fleet. Equipped with twin turboprop engines, the aircraft can operate from short and unprepared runways, making it particularly effective for logistics, troop movement, and supply missions in remote, mountainous, and border regions.

India signed a ₹21,935 crore deal with Airbus for 56 C-295 aircraft. Under the agreement, 16 aircraft are being delivered in fly-away condition from Spain, while the remaining 40 are being manufactured at the Vadodara facility. The maiden flight of the first India-built aircraft marks a key milestone in the programme and demonstrates the country’s expanding indigenous defence production capabilities. The Indian Air Force congratulated the teams involved in the project, stating that the achievement reflects India’s growing strength in the aerospace sector and will contribute significantly to enhancing the nation’s defence preparedness.
