In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation, Varanasi will introduce India’s first hydrogen-powered water taxis on the Ganga River starting December 4, 2025. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the eco-friendly vessels from Namo Ghat, marking a significant milestone in the country’s green mobility initiatives. The hydrogen-fueled boats, manufactured in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, represent a zero-emission alternative to conventional watercraft.
The innovative water taxis aim to achieve dual objectives: providing tourists and pilgrims with pollution-free travel along the holy river while simultaneously easing vehicular congestion on the city’s roads. The service is expected to enhance the travel experience for millions of visitors who flock to Kashi annually.
