Famous comedian Kapil Sharma’s show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, currently streaming on Netflix, has landed in legal trouble over copyright violations. The new season’s first episode, featuring Priyanka Chopra as a guest, reportedly used three popular Bollywood songs without proper licensing. Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) India has filed a case in the Bombay High Court against the show’s production houses, K9 Films Pvt. Ltd. and BeingU Studios Pvt. Ltd. The songs in question are: “M Bole To” from Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), “Rama Re” from Kante (2002), and “Subah Hone Na De” from Desi Boyz (2011).
According to PPL India, these tracks were played in the third season during episodes featuring Siddharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, as well as Akshay Kumar, without securing the required licenses from rights holders. Under the Copyright Act, 1957, public performance or communication of music requires permission from the rights holders. The case claims that the production companies failed to obtain any license, leading to allegations of copyright infringement.
