Elon Musk’s X Launches ‘X Money’: A New Digital Banking and Payment Service

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has taken a major stride toward becoming an “everything app” with the official rollout of X Money, a new digital banking and payment service. Designed to blend social networking with routine financial services, the platform allows eligible users to manage deposit accounts, execute peer-to-peer transfers, pay bills, and utilize custom Visa debit cards directly within the app.

Initially, the service is rolling out in the United States exclusively for X Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Users can enjoy free, real-time money transfers between X accounts, process direct deposits, wire funds, and mail physical checks. A standout feature of the ecosystem is the customizable metal Visa debit card—complete with the user’s X handle—which carries no foreign transaction fees, offers fee-free ATM withdrawals, and yields up to 3% cashback on eligible purchases. Additionally, high-tier accounts can unlock up to 6.00% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on deposits.

While functioning like a digital bank, X Money operates in partnership with New Jersey-regulated Cross River Bank rather than acting as a standalone financial institution. User funds are protected up to $250,000 per depositor under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) guidelines through a specialized cash sweep network. To maximize security, the platform replaces traditional passwords with advanced passkey support, enabling biometric login options like facial recognition and fingerprint scanning alongside strict transaction verification protocols. Although the service is currently restricted to the U.S. market.
